Grease Disposal and Preventing Sewer Blockages

Grease is the number #1 cause of sewer back-ups in apartments and homes.  Grease from cooking and dishwashing rapidly builds up in pipes and causes problems in the plumbing and sewer system.  Even a small amount of grease in sink drains can cause serious blockages in plumbing, including sewer over-flows on apartment property grounds and in your house or yard.

Never pour grease down sink drains or into the toilet.  Home garbage disposals do not keep grease out of the plumbing system.  It is always best to put grease in the garbage instead of the drain.  Store spent grease in an old jar, coffee can, or plastic bag with a zip closure.  When full, seal it and tie up in a plastic bag (example – a garbage bag) and dispose of it with the garbage.  Scrape and dispose of food scraps into the garbage can, not through the garbage disposal.

If you have any questions or comments, please call the City of College Park Water and Sewer Department, 404-669-3757.

Mandatory Outdoor Watering Restrictions
The City of College Park is reminding its citizens that mandatory year-round outdoor watering restrictions are
in effect.

The restrictions state that residences, businesses, government or institutional offices, and other facilities may use water for irrigation and non-essential uses are on the Odd-Even system.  This means that even-numbered street addresses may use water outdoors on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.   Odd-numbered street addresses may use water outdoors on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.  A new restriction imposed on June 21, 2006 states that no outdoor watering is permitted between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM.

Water use that is essential and integral in daily conduct of business in not included in the prohibition.  Examples of such essential and integral uses are commercial car washes, construction sites, commercial power washing, commercial hydro-seeding and professional licensed landscapers, golf course contractors and sports turf landscapers during installation and 30 days following installation. Water use by City residents is not prohibited during the seeding, over-seeding or installation of sod for 30 days following the installation.
